Father, name your daughter... part 2

These days, David is doing a lot of word study. He is constantly writing papers on the translation and meaning of words from Greek and Hebrew. It has been neat to see such careful study of words. So, in that vein, we have put a similar, yet very abbreviated (compared to his papers) study on the naming of our daughter.

Her name is Elizabeth Joy.

Elizabeth means consecrated to God or dedicated to a sacred purpose. In Hebrew, the word for joy contains the idea of gladness. As a verb, it means to rejoice, especially in the Lord's goodness. Tim Keller says, "To rejoice is to treasure a thing; to assess its value to you; to reflect on its beauty and importance until your heart rests in it and tastes the sweetness of it."

We pray that Elizabeth Joy will be set apart for the Lord and that she is able to rest in Him and taste His sweetness all the days of her life!

David thought about this yesterday when we decided on her name. In Luke 1:44, Mary, pregnant with Jesus, is visiting her cousin Elizabeth. Elizabeth is pregnant too and she says, "For indeed, as soon as the voice of your (Mary's) greeting sounded in my ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy." Our Elizabeth Joy certainly likes to leap a lot too! She keeps herself busy in there (especially when I'm trying to sleep) :-)
